Psychosocial Support in Cancer and Palliative Care for the Patient Video Conference

Overview
This short education aims to explain the importance of psychosocial support in practice. The topic will be inclusive of either Oncology and Palliative Care professionals or settings. It will look at the broad spectrum of care and support that general Health professionals can employ.

Presented by

James Penhale, Clinical Psychologist

James is a clinical psychologist working in private practice in Perth Western Australia, and at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Cancer Centre. He is also currently a teacher/facilitator for the Cancer Council WA’s “Cancer Clinician’s Communication Program”.

Since 2007 James’ clinical practice has focused on helping adults affected by cancer to cultivate quality of life and effectively manage their physical and mental wellbeing. Additionally, he has delivered numerous education and clinical supervision services that help multidisciplinary teams deliver evidence-based, effective psychosocial care to people affected by cancer.

While the Head of Department at WA Psycho-Oncology Service (Department of Health, WA 2010-2018) he led in the development and implementation of key state-wide policy and service development projects that integrated psychosocial care as a core component of comprehensive cancer care.

Attendance records of individual participants and an evaluation from each participant is expected to be returned to PaSCE as soon as possible on completion of the session.

Our events are aimed at increasing knowledge and understanding of palliative care for health professionals caring for any person with a life-limiting illness in all settings.

The education programs are facilitated by project officers in collaboration with expert palliative care clinical providers and health professionals. Tailored education to meet specific requirements is available as we continue to improve and develop our programs to meet the growing demand for palliative and supportive care education.
